CPR is short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation
It’s an emergency procedure that uses chest compressions to keep blood and oxygen flowing when someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. It can keep a person alive until medical help arrives. Less than 10% will survive when CPR is used in the community BUT this goes up into the 20+% when used in conjunction with a Defibrillator.
Hedsor Golf Course and Club through its 2025 Charity partner provided training for staff and Club members on the current thinking and method to HELP SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE. Please be mindful that many methods have changed or been modified to improve the survival rate.
THAMES VALLEY AIR AMBULANCE (TVAA) provided two trainers for the afternoon of the 11th December to explain, demonstrate and for us to practice. Capacity was for 16 so we had a few spare places. FACT Last year TVAA were called to 1212 cardiac arrest .
What did we learn
- timing is of the essence
- do not consider providing mouth to mouth resuscitation…this is now old school
- establish if patient is breathing and or responding to sound, touch or pain (tap shoulder/pinch ear lobe)
- call 999 or 111 without delay as your first action
- the 999 call centre will guide you on action to be taken
- without delay even on the COURSE
- open up the chest area so skin is visible — this applies to both male and female
- Note: You will usually find a pair of scissors within the defibrillator pack to cut underwear/clothing
- commence hands-only CPR
- continue without rest until emergency services arrive —it’s critical
- open up the chest area so skin is visible — this applies to both male and female
- if more than one of you are attending the incident one of you will be despatched to source a defibrillator from a known location provided by the 999 call centre OR from our club building should the incident occur on Hedsor Course. The Club defibrillator is not recorded on the national network…see WhatsApp Mapa AED or Website https://www.defibfinder.uk/ sponsored by NHS.
- remember to keep well back when the shock is administered and then immediately recommence hands-only CPR
- note there are many web sites offering a map service with AED locations b.ut they seem to differ in identified locations.
- remember – Keep hands-only CPR AND defibrillator treatment as instruction by the 999 call centre
Be mindful that when treating children, typically, 8 years old or under, this will require a different approach on the use of how much hand pressure to apply. And again a pregnant woman needs additional care and attention to keep the hand position positively above the location of the Sternum.
Treatment provides the opportunity of survival! Don’t hesitate, this wastes crucial time!
If you are interested in attending such as a course at the Club in the future please add your request in the comments below.

RECOGNISE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CARDIAC ARREST AND A HEART ATTACK
| Cardiac arrest | Heart attack |
| The Heart stops pumping blood around the body | The blood supply to the heart muscle is suddenly blocked resulting in chest pain |
| Person stops breathing normally | Heart is still beating, they are still conscious and able to talk |
| This results in the person collapsing and becoming unconscious | Requires immediate medical assistance because of severe risk of going into cardiac arrest |
