Match Report: Hedsor GC at Eton College Golf – Away Day Challenge

, , ,

On a blazing summer day, six pairs from Hedsor Golf Club travelled to the historic grounds of Eton College Golf Club for a highly anticipated away fixture. Despite the gracious hospitality and picturesque surroundings, the Hedsor team found themselves outmatched on unfamiliar terrain, falling to a 4.5 – 1.5 defeat.

The six Hedsor pairings were:
– Tom & Ian
– Merv & Ray
– Karl & Bilal
– Robert & Den
– Lesley & AJ
– Paul & Trevor

Despite the scoreline, the day was filled with good humour, sportsmanship, and moments to remember.

From Tom, the day was “very enjoyable, great hospitality, and the course was very good.” The sentiment was echoed across the board, even as results didn’t go Hedsor’s way.

Karl and Bilal faced a rough day at the office, suffering a heavy 8&7 loss. In Bilal’s words:
“We recapitulated the Spurs and United season in 9 holes. I had to pick up on almost every hole—off 5s or 7s from the tee—and Karl wasn’t faring much better. Neither the woods nor irons were cooperating today.”

Adding a touch of comedy, Bilal confessed:
“Good news—I didn’t lose any of my balls… because I forgot them at home. I borrowed from our hosts, and like a good guest, returned them—all now resting in the Eton woodland!”

The Lesley & AJ pairing had their own challenge. The intense heat and no buggy forced Lesley to retire after the 12th hole, leaving AJ to carry on solo. He valiantly held the Eton pair until the final two holes, where “WingNut” of Eton sank two birdies to clinch the match.

Rob captured the spirit of the day perfectly:
“It was an absolute pleasure to be there. Special thanks to Cathy and Clive for their company. The course was excellent, though it showed how valuable local knowledge can be. We’ll look forward to the return leg at Hedsor, where we hope to level the playing field. Everyone should be proud—they gave it their all.”

Special thanks to Sue from Hedsor and Heather from Eton for their efforts in arranging such a well-run and enjoyable event.

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the match fell on **Friday the 13th** – a day known for misfortune. Let’s just say the golf gods were clearly in on the joke, and luck wasn’t wearing Hedsor colours!

While the result didn’t fall in Hedsor’s favour, the day offered a memorable mix of sport, laughter, and camaraderie. The team left Eton with heads held high, grateful for the experience and determined to return the favour—and perhaps the result—when Eton visits Hedsor in the near future.
