Our Competitions
The club, subject always to “The Course” conditions permitting, run Sunday morning and one off competitions intended for members although by arrangement a guest may be accommodated and for the special events including Charity supporting events are open to guests and visitors . Generally prizes are limited to those that meet entry conditions defined for the competition.
We have gender neutral tees:
- White Tees (only for competitions) when conditions permit.
- Yellow Tees are often used for certain regular events and Red Tees are in use during the winter period where course conditions dictate.
- Wintertime it is usual to only play red tees or temporary tees in proximity to red markers.
Events under this heading are usually run on Sunday, with first Tee at 08:00
The Monthly Medal is the keynote event for members. The other Sunday events are played in varying formats providing opportunity to record cards for HCP and or fun. We also have a variety of trophy related competitions.
Club Competition events
This competition is played on a Strokeplay basis (i.e. the total number of strokes taken to complete all 18 holes in each of the two rounds) whereby the player with the lowest aggregate nett score (i.e. gross score less Playing Handicap) for both rounds wins the competition.
The competition is played over two consecutive Sundays in July (in accordance with the dates set out in the annual calendar), weather permitting. Each players Handicap Index is ‘frozen’ so that it remains the same for both rounds.
Singles and Pairs Summer and Winter Match play Competition
These competitions are played on a Matchplay basis (i.e. the player that wins the most holes wins the match) whereby the player with the nett lowest score for that hole, wins the hole. If the nett scores are tied then the hole is ‘halved’
The Summer competition is played between April and the following September and the Winter competition between October and the following March.
Each round is expected to be completed in accordance with the timetable set out at the time the draw is made. The draw is usually made by the Men’s Captain in the month preceding the start of the competition. It is the Men’s Captains decision to extend completion dates, if necessary, due to course closures for bad weather etc.
Ideally, and to the extent possible, players only able to play mid-week matches should be in one half of the draw and those only able to play weekend matches in the other half of the draw.
For each match, players can mutually decide as to whether to award strokes received on a nett or gross basis. If no agreement is reached it should be played on a gross basis i.e. each player receives the full number of strokes allowed for every hole based on their full Course Handicap for their Handicap Index.
Travis Competition
The Travis Cup competition is a Stapleford format mid-week (Monday to Friday inclusive) only competition, as specified in the covenant of the original benefactor.
The competition is played over a consecutive 12 week period on dates specified in the Members annual timetable (published in the December of the preceding year).
Each player may compete once only per week in the maximum 10 weeks permitted over the 12 week period.
Of the maximum 10 weeks allowed, only the best 8 weeks scores will qualify towards their aggregate points score. In a similar manner for the winter equivalent competition. See 8 below.
A trophy is awarded to the player with the highest number of points on completion of the 12 week period.
For players with the same aggregate points score, ties will be resolved by reference to highest number of points in any qualifying week, then the next highest and so on until a winner is determined.
A table showing the cumulative points position will be published periodically during the 12 week competition period, on the Members noticeboard in the Clubhouse.
A parallel autumn/winter session from November to end of March using the same format was available to members from 2024.
