For those not familar with the phrase….an abridged definition

The Ferret in Golf

‘The Ferret’ is a golf term for holing the ball from off the green (not using a putter) for par or better. The term likely comes from how ferrets dive into holes. Achieving a ferret can occur from any distance and is a point of pride for golfers.

The Golden Ferret

A ‘Golden Ferret’ means holing the ball directly from a bunker. Its rarity makes it a notable feat, turning challenging moments into memorable achievements.

The Origins

The phrase combines two terms: ‘ferret’ (holing out from off the green without a putter for par or better) and ‘golden sandy’ (holing out from a greenside bunker). A ‘golden ferret’ often follows a tough shot, and ‘nitby’ stands for ‘Not in the bunker yet,’ describing tricky situations before reaching a bunker.

In Conclusion

Both terms highlight golf’s unique language and the excitement that comes from skillful or unexpected shots.
